You feel the altitude before you see the path. Thin air outside Debark, dust lifting off the track as you move toward the Simien Mountains villages with the pack sitting steady between your shoulders.

The Stornoway rides high and close. Reinforced straps doing their job while you climb past stone houses and terraced fields cut into impossible angles. A thermos of strong coffee tucked inside. Flatbread wrapped in paper. The drawcord closure pulled tight before the wind shifts along the ridge.

This is ground that does not forgive laziness. Cold mornings. Sharp sun by midday. You stop near a lookout where gelada monkeys move across the escarpment and let the weight drop to the earth for a minute. Brass hardware dulls slightly in the highland air. Leather softens, not weak.

Twenty five litres is enough when you plan lightly and improvise heavily. One bag. Mountain miles. Village roads that feel older than maps.
